What is Strattera?

Strattera is a brand medication that contains Atomoxetine, which belongs to a class of medications known as Norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors. It works by balancing the chemical in the brain to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

How to use it?

Strattera is available as capsules. It can be taken with or without food. Do not crush, chew, or open the capsule.
 

For Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD),
Adult
Take 40mg daily once in the morning or 20mg twice daily. It can be increased to 80 mg daily after at least 3 days, and it can be increased to 100 mg daily after 2-4 more weeks.
 
Children above 6 years of age
Above 70kg: 40mg daily once in the morning or 20mg twice daily.  It can be increased to 80 mg daily after at least 3 days, and it can be increased to 100 mg daily after 2-4 more weeks.

Less than 70kg: 0.5 mg/kg daily once in the morning or dividing the dose twice daily. It can be increased to 1.2 mg/kg daily after at least 3 days, and it can be increased to 1.4 mg/kg daily or up to 100 mg daily after 2-4 more weeks.

What are the side effects of Strattera?

Common side effects of Stratter include headache, insomnia, drowsiness, excessive sweating, dry mouth, erectile dysfunction and decreased appetite.

Who should not take Strattera?

  • People who are allergic to Strattera or any component of the formulation.
  • People with use within 14 days of MAO inhibitors.
  • Patients with narrow-angle glaucoma or uncontrolled hyperthyroidism.
  • Patients with a current or history of pheochromocytoma.
  • Patients with severe cardiac or vascular disorders.

Pharmacist Tips:

  • Do not crush, chew, or open the capsule.
  • It is recommended to take it in the morning to reduce the risk of insomnia.
  • The lowest effective dose should be taken to control ADHD, which requires careful dose titration by your healthcare professionals.

Common dosing schedule: 

Strattera can be taken once in the morning or twice daily, with or without food.

 

This schedule is for reference only, adjustments may be made according to individual needs. 

 

Some common medications Strattera may interact with:

  • Beta-2 agonists, e.g. Albuterol, Terbutaline, Salbutamol
  • CYP2D6 inhibitors, e.g. Bupropion, Paroxetine, Terbinafine
  • Monoamine oxidase inhibitors, e.g. Rasagiline, Selegiline, Phenelzine
  • QT-prolonging agents, e.g. Clarithromycin, Escitalopram, Paliperidone
  • Sympathomimetics, e.g. Ephedrine, Pseudoephedrine, Dobutamine

Please notify your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking the above medication, dosage adjustments might be needed.

In Hong Kong, Strattera is a prescription only medicine, and requires a prescription from a doctor to be purchased in a pharmacy. It can also be obtained from doctors.
