Ulcerative colitis is a condition under IBD (Inflammatory bowel disease), where there is inflammation in the rectum that may spread to the colon. Inflammation at the rectum is referred to as proctitis, inflammation at the distal colon is referred to as distal colitis, and inflammation of the whole colon is referred to as pancolitis.
Ulcerative colitis is not the same as Crohn’s disease. In ulcerative colitis, the inflammation occurs in the colon and rectum, and the inflammation is continuous. The inflammation is only present on the innermost layer of the colon.
