What is Plaquenil?

Plaquenil is a brand product that contains Hydroxychloroquine, which belongs to a class of antimalarial agents. It works by killing the malaria parasite and is therefore used to treat or prevent malaria. It is also used to treat autoimmune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus.

How to use it?

Plaquenil is available as tablets. Taking it with meal or milk can enhance absorption.
 

For prevention of malaria, take 400 mg one day a week. Begin treatment 2 weeks prior to exposure and continue until 8 weeks after exposure.

 

For rheumatoid arthritis and lupus erythematosus, take 200-400 mg once daily. The maximum daily dose is 400 mg per day.

 

What are the side effects of Plaquenil?

Common side effects of Plaquenil include nausea and vomiting, fatigue, headache, dizziness, decreased appetite and visual disturbances. Long-term use at higher doses can cause eye toxicity, so it is important to have eyes examined on a regular basis.

Who should not take Plaquenil?

  • People who are allergic to any ingredient of Plaquenil.

  • Do not exceed the prescribed dose.
  • Take antacids 4 hours before or after taking Plaquenil.
  • Taking Plaquenil can cause sensitivity to light. Wear sunscreen or avoid sun exposure when taking this medicine.
