What is Megestrol for?
Megestrol is a progestin belonging to a class of medications called endocrine drugs, resembling the structure of progesterone, which is a female sex hormones influencing metabolic processes. It is used for the treatment of breast cancer, cancer hormone therapy and endometrial hyperplasia.
How to use it?
Megestrol is available as tablets in Hong Kong. It differs little regarding what time in a day you take the pills, but it has to be consistent between days.
Advanced breast cancer
40 mg 4 times daily for at least 2 months.
Advanced endometrial cancer
40-320 mg daily in divided doses for at least 2 months.
What are the side effects of Megestrol?
Who should not take Megestrol?
– People allergic to Megestrol or any component of the formulation.
– Avoid using in elderly patients as insufficient data to prove its safety.
Common dosing schedule:
Megestrol is used in divided doses, commonly 4 times daily. Try to divide to make the doses equivalent. For example, when 120 mg is to be taken, 40 mg 3 times daily is to be taken.
This schedule is for reference only, adjustments may be made according to individual needs.

– Antidiabetic agents, e.g. Metformin, Glipizide, Insulin
– Systemic corticosteroids, e.g. Cortisone, Hydrocortisone, Prednisone
