Dilantin is a brand medication that contains Phenytoin, which belongs to an anticonvulsant medicine called sodium channel blockers. It works by stabilizing electrical activities in nerves and the brain and is used for the treatment and prevention of seizures and epilepsy. It can also be given while in hospital to prevent seizures during or following severe head injury.
Dilantain is available as capsules, extended-release capsules, oral suspension and injections.
The usual daily dose is 100 mg by mouth 3 times a day. You may require a higher dosage to treat your seizure condition. Your doctor may adjust your dose based on your blood level of Dilantin.
Common side effects of Dilantin include reduced bone mineral (Calcium and vitamin D levels) density, gingival hyperplasia, skin rash, and increased hair growth.
