What is Spiriva?

Spiriva is a brand product that contains Tiotropium, which belongs to a class of medications called bronchodilators. It works by relaxing the smooth muscle of the airways, and therefore opening up the airways. It is used to treat acute asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). 

How to use it?

Spiriva comes in two formulations, Spiriva Respimat and Spiriva HandiHaler. The Respimat one is the latest formulation and it is easier to use.

For Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD),
Spiriva HandiHaler: 18 mcg once daily.
Spiriva Respimat: 5 mcg once daily.

For Asthma,
Spiriva HandiHaler: 18 mcg once daily.
Spiriva Respimat: 5 mcg once daily.


Child above 6 years of age, 

Spiriva Respimat: 2.5-5 mcg once daily.

What are the side effects of Spiriva?

Common side effects of Spiriva include dry mouth, upper respiratory tract infection, angina and headache.

Who should not take Spiriva?

  • People who are allergic to any component of Spiriva.

Pharmacist Tips:

  • Stop smoking while you are on this medication.
  • Regular exercise at a moderate intensity.
  • Prime your inhaler before first use.
  • When using HandiHaler, the content should be inhaled twice after pressing once.
  • Two different formulations have different inhaler use techniques, read the patient insert carefully or speak to your pharmacist if you are unsure.

Common dosing schedule: 
Take ONE puff once daily at the same time every day.

Where to buy Spiriva in Hong Kong?

In Hong Kong, Spiriva is a prescription only medicine, and requires a prescription from a doctor to be purchased in a pharmacy. It can also be obtained from doctors.
