What is Seroxat?

Seroxat is a brand product that contains Paroxetine, which belongs to a class of medications called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). It works by increasing the level of the hormone, serotonin, which helps to elevate mood. It is therefore used to treat generalised anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), major depressive disorder and menopausal symptoms.

How to use it?

Seroxat is available as tablets or controlled-release tablets. The usual starting dose is 20 mg daily preferably in the morning. Then the dose can be slowly increased by 10mg at intervals of at least 1 week based on your response. The maintenance dose is 40mg daily. The maximum daily dose is 60mg.

For controlled-release tablets, the usual starting dose is 12.5mg daily. The maximum daily dose is 75mg.

What are the side effects of Seroxat?

Common side effects of Seroxat include excessive sweating, nausea and vomiting, headache and insomnia. If you experience more side effects, switching to controlled-release tablets can help reduce the side effects.

Who should not take Seroxat?

  • People who are allergic to any component of Seroxat
  • People taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors and took the last pill in the past 14 days

Pharmacist Tips:

  • It may take up to a few weeks to see the effects.
  • Do not stop abruptly as it may cause withdrawal syndrome, such as headache and muscle tension.
  • Do not drink alcohol as it may worsen your mood.

Common dosing schedule:
Take with or without food, preferably in the morning.

This schedule is for reference only, adjustments may be made according to individual needs.

Some common medications Seroxat may interact with:

  • Metoclopramide
  • Monoamine oxidase inhibitors, ie. Rasagiline, Selegiline
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, ie. Diclofenac, Ibuprofen

Please notify your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking the above medication, dosage adjustments might be needed.

Where to buy Seroxat in Hong Kong?
