What is Ezetimibe for?

Ezetimibe belongs to a class of medications called cholesterol absorption inhibitors which can reduce low-density lipoprotein (LDL, “bad cholesterol”) levels. It is a second-line antihyperlipidemic agent used in Hong Kong, as an adjunct to statin for better blood lipids control. Combination therapy of a statin and Ezetimibe is available in the market now, aiming to reduce frequencies of dosing and improve quality of life for patients, such as Vytorin® (containing Simvastatin) and Atozet® (containing Atorvastatin). The detailed indications include:
– homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HoFH)
– homozygous sitosterolemia
– primary hyperlipidemia and mixed hyperlipidemia

How to use it?

Ezetimibe is available in tablets for oral use. The usual dose is 10 mg once daily, usually in combination with a statin.

What are the side effects of Ezetimibe?

Common side effects of Ezetimibe include upper respiratory infection, diarrhea, arthralgia, sinusitis, back pain, and headache.

Who should not take Ezetimibe?

– People allergic to Ezetimibe or any components of the formulation
– Pregnant or breastfeeding women when used with a statin
– Patients with hepatic diseases when used with a statin

Lifestyle modification is the first line treatment for hyperlipidemia, which includes a healthy diet, regular exercise and weight management.

Common dosing schedule:
Ezetimibe can be taken with or without food. You may take it at the same time as a statin or Fenofibrate. If you need to take Cholestyramine, administer Ezetimibe ≥ 2 hours before or ≥ 4 hours after Cholestyramine.

This schedule is for reference only, adjustments may be made according to individual needs.
