Lamictal is a brand medication that contains Lamotrigine, which belongs to a class of medications called phenyltriazine anticonvulsants. It works by balancing the chemicals in the brain. It is therefore used to treat psychotic disorders such as epilepsy and bipolar disorders.
Lamictal is available as tablets or orodispersible tablets.
For epilepsy
Adult
Monotherapy: start with 25 mg once daily for 2 weeks, then 50 mg once daily for 2 weeks, then increase by 50-100 mg daily every 1-2 weeks. Maintenance dose is 100-200 mg daily.
Adjunctive with other anticonvulsants without valproate: start with 50 mg once daily for 2 weeks, then 50 mg twice daily for 2 weeks, then increase by a maximum of 100 mg daily every 1-2 weeks. Maintenance dose is 200-400 mg daily.
Adjunctive with valproate: start with 25 mg every other day for 2 weeks, then 25 mg once daily for 2 weeks, then increase by 25-50 mg daily every 1-2 weeks. Maintenance dose is 100-200 mg daily.
For Bipolar disorder
The maximum dosage for treating bipolar disorder is 200 mg daily.
Adult
Monotherapy: start with 25 mg once daily for 2 weeks, then 50 mg daily in 1 or 2 divided doses for 2 weeks, then 100 mg daily in 1 or 2 divided doses for 1 week, then increase to a target dose of 200 mg daily.
Adjunctive with other anticonvulsants without valproate: start with 50 mg once daily for 2 weeks, then 50 mg twice daily for 2 weeks, then 100 mg twice daily for 1 week, then 150 mg twice daily for 1 week, then increase to a target dose of 400 mg daily.
Adjunctive with valproate: start with 25 mg every other day for 2 weeks, then 25 mg once daily for 2 weeks, then 50 mg daily in 1 or 2 divided doses for 1 week, then increase to a target dose of 100 mg daily.
Common dosing schedule:
Take with or without food. Taking with food can help reduce stomach discomfort.
