What is Fosamax?

Fosamax is a brand product that contains Alendronate, which belongs to a class of drug known as bisphosphonates. It works by slowing down the rate of bone turnover, so the bone mineral density increases. Fosamax is used for osteoporosis.

How to use it?

Fosamax is available as tablets only. It is taken in the morning at least 30 minutes before the first food or drink, unless it is water, while sitting upright. 
 

For osteoporosis, take 70 mg once weekly.

What are the side effects of Fosamax?

Common side effects of Fosamax include stomach pain and discomfort, constipation, throat irritations and headache.

Who should not take Fosamax?

  • Anyone who is allergic to any component of Fosamax.
  • Patients with low calcium levels.
  • Patients with abnormalities of the oesophagus.
  • Patients who are unable to stand or sit upright for at least 30 minutes.

In Hong Kong, Fosamax is a prescription only medicine, and requires a prescription from a doctor to be purchased in a pharmacy. It can also be obtained from doctors.
