Atrovent is a brand product that contains Ipratropium, which belongs to a class of Short-acting muscarinic antagonists. It works as a bronchodilator by relaxing smooth muscles and opening up the airways. It is used as a maintenance treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and is sometimes used for asthma attacks.
Atrovent is available as an inhalation solution and inhaler. The inhaler form of Ipratropium is usually used for asthma relief, whereas inhalation solution is used for COPD.
For asthma attacks and COPD 6 years or above, the usual dose is 20-40 mcg 3-4 times a day. For children 1 month - 5 years, use 20mcg 3 times a day.
Common side effects of Atrovent include dizziness, nausea, stomach upset, dry mouth and constipation.
Ensure the correct inhaler technique is needed. You can also use a spacer for easier coordination.Please seek help from your pharmacist or doctor if you are unsure of how to use the inhaler correctly.
