What is Dermatology?

Dermatology is a medical specialty treating the diseases of the skin, nails and hair. The treatments can involve surface treatment, use of medicines and even surgery. Many people refer to dermatologists as skin doctors, though their practice goes beyond skin issues.

The Basics of Dermatology in Hong Kong

There are currently 107 registered dermatologists in Hong Kong. Here is the official list of registered dermatologists.

There are also 9 public clinics which provide dermatological services. The demand is high and waiting times in the public sector may be long as there are only 36 specialists.

In Hong Kong, it takes six years to become a dermatologist. The training involves three years of basic physician training validated by the Hong Kong College of Physicians and the Royal College of Physicians. The trainees will then take an additional training of three years to specialize in Dermatology and Venereology.

Moreover, to be able to practice as a specialist, Doctors must register with the Medical Council of Hong Kong. This ensures that all members are awarded and certified by the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine (HKAM), have completed their postgraduate medical training and continuously update their medical education.

How much does it cost to see a dermatologist in Hong Kong?

Public sector fees: For eligible HKID-holders the prices range from HK$50 in a general clinic with dermatological services, to HK$135 in a specialized clinic.

Non-eligible people can still visit the clinics, but will be charged HK$445 each visit to a general clinic and HK$1,190 to specialized one in dermatology.

Private sector fees: In the private sector, the cost of seeing a dermatologist varies tremendously according to the doctor’s location – like for other specialties. According to our research, the average cost of a first consultation can vary between HK$700 to HK$2,800
