Overview of Ruttonjee Hospital
Ruttonjee is a public hospital located in Wan Chai. It is under the Hospital Authority’s Management, and is a major acute general hospital providing accident and emergency (A&E) and specialist services.
It was opened in 1843 and underwent a series of upgrades until the end of 1993. Ruttonjee was then integrated with Tang Shiu Kin Hospital. It has 600 beds and is also one of the teaching hospitals of Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine at the University of Hong Kong.

A&E services and Costs
Ruttonjee Hospital has a 24-hour accident and emergency service with a full range of acute specialist and ambulatory services.
Costs at Ruttonjee Hospital are determined by the Hospital Authority. Costs are categorized into 3 groups: eligible persons, non-eligible persons, and private charges.
Eligible persons are defined as:
- Holders of Hong Kong Identity Card
- Children who are Hong Kong residents and under 11 years of age
- Approved by the Chief Executive of the Hospital Authority

Medical insurance coverage at Ruttonjee hospital
If you are an eligible person (i.e. holder of a HKID) and have medical insurance, public hospital costs can be reimbursed. Considering how low public fees are, most patients pay out-of-pocket.
