It is a major acute general hospital and provides a range of specialist services in the eastern district of Hong Kong island. It opened in October 1993 and is also a teaching hospital of Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine of the Hong Kong University. It has around 1,830 beds with around 3,000 staff.

If you are an eligible person (i.e. holder of a HKID) and have medical insurance, public hospital costs can be reimbursed. Considering how low public fees are, most patients pay out-of-pocket.
