Pediatricians are doctors who specialize in child healthcare. They are doctors who treat physical, behavior and mental health issues in children and young teenagers until the age of 18. Of the 44 public hospitals in Hong Kong, there are 16 Hospital Authority (public) hospitals in Hong Kong with pediatricians.
In Hong Kong, it takes a minimum of 6 years to be a pediatrician. The training program for a prospective pediatrician consists of 3 years of basic training, an intermediate examination, followed by 3 years of higher training and an exit assessment. When all these have been completed, subject to approval by the Hong Kong College of Paediatricians, the trainee will become a Fellow of the Hong Kong College of Paediatricians. He or she will then be eligible for recommendation to be a Fellow of the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine, and will be eligible for listing in the Specialist Register.
After delivery, your child will have to see a pediatrician frequently from birth to the age of 2, and at least once a year after that for annual checkups. If your child shows symptoms of a specific condition, your pediatrician may refer him or her to a pediatric specialist for further evaluation. Also, if your child is sick, you should call a pediatrician.
If your child does not experience any symptoms or sickness, seeing a pediatrician for preventive care services is still be beneficial. Preventive care services that pediatricians commonly conduct in relation to development tracking. Pediatricians monitor the growth and development of your child by measuring their height, weight and body mass index (BMI). Pediatricians may also ask about your child’s behavior at home and observe things like vision focus, sensory reaction, language, walking, reflexes and muscle tone. This allows pediatricians to see if there are any developmental delays in your child.

In Hong Kong the cost of a consultation with a pediatrician varies greatly, depending among others on the location and facilities. Our research shows that consultations in the private sector range from $600 to $1,800.
For eligible HKID-holders, attending a public specialist clinic costs $135 for first attendance and $80 for subsequent attendance.
For non-eligible people, the price of attending a public general clinic is $1,190 per attendance.
Beware of waiting times which can be very long in the public sector. Please enquire at your clinic of choice for the specific costs.

According to Alea, pediatric care is reimbursed under doctor specialist fees. Generally, high-end medical plans will reimburse pediatrician fees in full without any sub-limit whereas local plans will have a doctor specialist limit.
