It was established in 1975 and in 1981 was built a new building (Lai King Building), 5 minutes away from the main hospital.
Princess Margaret Hospital had 1,733 beds and 4,445 Staff as of June 2017. It is a tertiary referral centre for Infectious disease, Nephrology and Urology and also it is the cluster referral centre for Oncology, Trauma, Renal Transplant and Dialysis, Lithotripsy, Pulmonary Medicine and tuberculosis, high-risk Obstetrics care, and also Paediatric and Neonatal intensive care.

There are 108 isolation beds with 14 ICU beds.
