What is Xigduo XR?

Xigduo XR is a brand medication that contains Dapagliflozin and Metformin. Dapagliflozin belongs to the class of SGLT-2 inhibitors, which work by preventing the reabsorption of sugar and facilitating its excretion in urine to control blood sugar level, whereas Metformin belongs to a class of biguanide antidiabetics that help to lower glucose production. They work in combination to lower blood glucose to treat type 2 diabetes.

How to use it?

Xigduo XR is available as extended-release tablets, taken with or after the evening meal. The usual starting dose is 5mg of Dapagliflozin and 500mg of Metformin. The maximum daily dose of 10mg/2000mg is given as two 5mg/1000mg tablets.

What are the side effects of Xigduo XR?

Common side effects of Dapagliflozin include stomach pain, decreased appetite, transient diarrhoea, nausea and vomiting, increased urination, back pain and urinary tract infection.

Who should not take Xigduo XR?

  • Anyone who is allergic to any component of Xigduo XR
  • Patients with severe renal impairment, or on dialysis
  • People with acute or chronic metabolic acidosis

Pharmacist Tips:

  • Non-drug management, including diet and exercise, also plays an important role in controlling both types of diabetes.
  • Since urinary tract infection or genital yeast infection is a common adverse effect using Xigduo XR, report any signs or symptoms of burning sensation when peeing or redness.
  • Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you experience sweating, feeling dizzy, fast heartbeat and pale skin as these could be signs of low blood sugar level.
  • Always carry a fast-acting carbohydrate with you, such as sweets and dextrose, in case of a low blood sugar level.

Common dosing schedule:
Take it with or after the evening meal.

This schedule is for reference only, adjustments may be made according to individual needs.
