What is Vyvanse?

Vyvanse is a brand medication that contains Lisdexamfetamine, which belongs to a class of Norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors. It works by balancing the chemical in the brain to treat mental health conditions like Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

How to use it?

Vyvanse is available as capsules only. It can be taken with or without food.

For attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD),
Children ages 6 and above
The initial dose is 30mg once daily in the morning. The dose can be increased by 10-20mg at weekly intervals. The maximum daily dose of 70 mg.

What are the side effects of Vyvanse?

Common side effects of Vyvanse include mood changes, decreased appetite, irregular heart rhythms, stomach discomfort, high blood pressure, palpitations, insomnia, and decreased weight. Growth retardation may also occur in children.

Who should not take Vyvanse?

  • People with an allergy to Vyvanse or other ingredients of the formulation
  • Patients with anorexia, irregular heartbeat, severe hypertension, heart failure and other cardiovascular diseases, severe depression, and overactivity of the thyroid gland

Pharmacist Tips:

  • Children taking this medicine may stunt growth, make sure the patients are closely monitoring their height when taking this medicine.
  • It should be taken in the morning to reduce the risk of insomnia.

Common dosing schedule: 
Take it once daily in the morning, with or without food.

Some common medications Vyvanse may interact with:

  • Warfarin
  • Anticonvulsants, e.g. Phenobarbital, Phenytoin
  • Monoamine oxidase inhibitors, e.g. Rasagiline, Selegiline
  • Tricyclic antidepressants, e.g. Clomipramine, Imipramine

In Hong Kong, Vyvanse is a prescription only medicine, and requires a prescription from a doctor to be purchased in a pharmacy. It can also be obtained from doctors.
