What is Valium?

Valium is a brand medication that contains Diazepam, which belongs to the class of Benzodiazepine hypnotics. It works by increasing the effects of a chemical in the brain to induce relaxation in the body. It is used to treat seizures, anxiety, alcohol withdrawal syndrome and muscle spasm.

How to use it?

Valium is available as tablets.

For anxiety,
Adult
Take 2 mg 3 times a day, then increase if necessary to 15–30 mg daily in divided doses.

Elderly
Take 1 mg 3 times a day, then increase if necessary to 7.5–15 mg daily in divided doses.

For insomnia associated with anxiety,
Adult
Take 5–15 mg daily at bedtime.

For alcohol withdrawal syndrome,
Adult
Take 5-20mg at once. If necessary, it may be repeated in 2-4 hours. Alternatively, 10mg 3-4 times during the first 24 hours, reducing to 5mg 3-4 times daily as needed.

Elderly
Reduce to half of the adult dose.

What are the side effects of Valium?

Common side effects of Valium include abnormal dreams, decreased alertness, amnesia, psychosis, sweating, skin rash and muscle pain. Other side effects like coordination problems (Ataxia) and confusion are more commonly seen in elderly. Taking a higher dose can increase the risk of more severe side effects like cardiac failure and respiratory depression.

Who should not take Valium?

  • People who are allergic to Valium or any component of the formulation or other benzodiazepines
  • Patients with severe hepatic impairment
  • Patients with myasthenia gravis
  • Patients with severe respiratory insufficiency and sleep apnea

Pharmacist Tips:

  • Ensure good sleep hygiene like keeping your nightly routine consistent and unplugging from electronics.
  • As with all Benzodiazepines, it should not be used long-term to prevent the development of dependence.
  • Avoid abrupt withdrawal as it can cause withdrawal symptoms.
  • Do not drive or operate machinery after taking Valium.
  • Avoid drinking alcohol while you are on this medicine.

Common dosing schedule:
Valium can be taken with or without food.

This schedule is for reference only, adjustments may be made according to individual needs.

Some common medications Valium may interact with:

  • Chlormethiazole
  • Atypical antipsychotics, e.g. Clozapine, Olanzapine
  • CNS depressants, e.g. Buprenorphine, Methadone
  • Opioids, e.g. Morphine, Oxycodone
