Ursofalk is a brand medication that contains Ursodeoxycholic acid, which is a type of naturally occurring bile acid. It helps to decrease cholesterol production in the liver and breaks it down, therefore stopping the formation of gallstones and dissolving existing gallstones. It can also stimulate bile flow in the damaged bile duct to treat primary biliary cirrhosis.
Ursofalk is available as tablets and capsules. Do not chew or break the tablets. The tablets should be taken with food. Do not take it with aluminium-containing antacids or bile acid sequestrants, or at least take it 2 hours after taking Ursofalk.
For gallstone dissolution,
Capsule: 8-10mg/kg daily in 2-3 divided doses.
For gallstone prevention,
Capsule: 600 mg daily in 1-2 divided doses.
For primary biliary cirrhosis,
Tablet: 13-15mg/kg daily in 2-4 divided doses. One of the doses should be taken at bedtime.
Common side effects of Ursofalk include diarrhea and discoloured faeces. In rare cases, it may also cause upper abdominal pain, skin reactions, cirrhosis exacerbation and calcification of gallstone.
