Stemetil belongs to a class of medications called typical antipsychotics. It works by balancing the chemicals in the brain, and hence restores normal neurological behavior. Stemetil is therefore used to relieve nausea and vomiting, anxiety, vertigo due to ear diseases, and is used to treat psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia.
Stemetil is taken orally, and the dosages are listed below.
Vertigo in patients with Meniere’s syndrome or labyrinthitis
Adult
5 mg three times daily, which may be increased gradually to 30 mg daily in divided doses. After several weeks, reduce the dose to 5-10 mg daily.
Elderly
Dose reduction may be necessary.
Nausea and vomiting
Adult
For prevention of nausea and vomiting, use 5-10 mg 2-3 times daily.
For treatment of nausea and vomiting, use 20 mg initially, followed by 10 mg after 2 hours if necessary.
Elderly
Dose reduction may be necessary.
Child over 1 year
Body weight >10 kg: 0.25 mg/kg body weight 2-3 times daily.
Short term management of severe anxiety
Adult
As adjunct therapy. Initially 15-20 mg daily in divided doses. May increase to a maximum of 40 mg daily if necessary.
Elderly
Dose reduction may be necessary.
Mania, Schizophrenia
Adult
Initially 12.5 mg twice daily for 7 days, then gradually increase in 4-7 days interval until satisfactory response is achieved. Usual dose is 75-100 mg daily.
Elderly
Dose reduction may be necessary.
Common dosing schedule:
Stemetil can be taken with or without food. Taking it with food may help to reduce gastrointestinal discomfort.
