Singulair is a brand product that contains Montelukast, which belongs to a class of medications called leukotriene receptor blockers. It works by blocking the action of leukotrienes to prevent swelling and narrowing of the airways. Montelukast is used to prevent asthma and relieve the symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis like sneezing, runny nose and itchiness.
Singulair is available as tablets, chewable tablets or oral granules. It can be taken with or without food. The oral granules can be placed directly into the mouth or mixed with a spoonful of room temperature food (only applesauce, carrots, rice, or ice cream should be used), breast milk, or baby formula. It should be taken within 15 minutes of mixing.
For prevention of asthma attacks between 15-17 years of age, use 10mg once daily at night. For 6-14 years, use 5 mg once daily at night. For 6 months-5 years, use 4 mg once daily at night.
For allergic rhinitis 15 years or above, use 10mg once daily at night.
