What is Prozac?

Prozac is a brand product that contains Fluoxetine, which belongs to a class of medications called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). It works by increasing the level of the hormone, serotonin, which helps to elevate mood. It is therefore used to treat various mental health conditions like depression with or without anxiety symptoms, bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and panic disorder.

How to use it?

Prozac is available as capsules.


For depression with or without anxiety, the usual starting dose is 20mg once daily, then slowly increase based on response. The maximum daily dose is 80mg.

For obsessive-compulsive disorder and panic disorder, the usual starting dose is 5-10mg once daily, then slowly increases based on response. The maximum daily dose is 60mg daily.

What are the side effects of Prozac?

Common side effects of Prozac include dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, constipation, lowered interest in sex, and sleep disturbance.

Who should not take Prozac?

  • Anyone who has an allergy to any components of Prozac

  • It may take up to a few weeks to see the effects.
  • Do not stop abruptly as it may cause withdrawal syndromes, such as headache and muscle tension.
  • Do not drink alcohol as it may worsen your mood.
