What is Proscar for?

Proscar is a brand medication that contains Finasteride, which belongs to a class of medications called 5 alpha–reductase inhibitors. It is used to treat the signs of an enlarged prostate by lowering the level of a certain male hormone.

How to use it?

Proscar is available as tablets. For relieving the signs of an enlarged prostate, take 5 mg once daily; assess response after 12 weeks to 6 months.

What are the side effects of Proscar?

Common side effects include dizziness, tiredness and loss of sex drive.

Who should not take Proscar?

Anyone who is allergic to any component of Proscar.

Pharmacist Tips:

  • Finasteride may take a few months to see the full effect, it may take at least 6 months for improvement of enlarged prostate.
  • Finasteride can be absorbed through the skin. If the film coating of the tablet has been broken or the tablet crushed, it should not be handled by a woman who is pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Exposing a developing male infant to Finasteride can result in abnormalities of the genitals.

Finasteride can be taken with or without food.
