Pentasa is a brand medication that contains Mesalazine, which belongs to a class of aminosalicylates. It works by reducing inflammation and is used for the treatment of ulcerative proctitis, a type of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) which takes place in the end part of the large intestines.
Pentasa is available in tablets, prolonged-release tablets, enteric-coated prolonged-release granules, suppositories and enema. Swallow the tablets or capsules whole. It should be taken with meals to reduce the gastrointestinal side effects.
Ulcerative Colitis
Adults and Children above 6 years of age and weighing more than 40 kg,
Pentasa suppositories or enema,
Acute treatment dose: 1g daily for 2-4 weeks.
Maintenance dose: 1g daily.
Pentasa tablet or prolonged-release tablet,
Acute attack: Initially, up to 4g daily in 2 or 3 divided doses.
Maintenance of remission: Initially, 2g once daily, then adjusted individually.
Pentasa prolonged-release granules
Acute attack: Initially, up to 4 g daily in 2 or 3 divided doses.
Maintenance of remission: Initially, 2 g once daily, then adjusted individually.
Common side effects of Pentasa include joint pain, cough, dizziness, kidney stones and gastric discomfort.
Common dosing schedule:
Pentasa should be taken with food to reduce the side effects.
