What is Noscapine for?

Noscapine belongs to a class of opioid agonists that are used in cough medicines. It works by suppressing the activity of the cough centre in the brain. It is therefore used to treat dry cough. It often comes in syrups together with other medicines for treating colds and flu.

How to use it?

Noscapine is available as tablets and syrups. It can be taken with or without food.

Adult and children above 12 years of age
Take 2 tablets four times a day.

What are the side effects of Noscapine?

Common side effects of Noscapine include nausea, vomiting, headache and dizziness.

Who should not take Noscapine?

  • Anyone who is allergic to any component of Noscapine
  • Children under 12 years of age
  • People who are taking or took monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) within the past 14 days

Pharmacist Tips:

  • Noscapine is limited to 1 week of use.
  • Do not take more than 8 tablets a day.

Common dosing schedule:
Noscapine is taken four times a day, with or without food.
