Mesna belongs to a class of medications called chemoprotective agents which converts acrolein produced in chemotherapy to something active. It is used for the prevention of urothelial toxicity and neurotoxicity associated with certain chemotherapy.
Mesna is injected through a needle into a vein as directed by your doctor. It follows the administration of Ifosfamide or Cyclophosphamide.
Prophylaxis against urothelial toxicity
Adult and elderly
20-40% of the IV bolus dose of Ifosfamide or Cyclophosphamide over 15-30 minutes. Repeat at 3-4 hour intervals after the first dose for at most 3 additional doses.
Child
A shorter interval or higher dose may be required.
Common side effects of Mesna include dizziness, drowsiness, conjunctivitis, flatulence and flushing.
People allergic to Mesna or any component of the formulation.
