What is Imodium for?

Imodium is a brand product that contains Loperamide, which is an opioid that can slow down bowel movements. It is used for the symptomatic relief of diarrhea, including Traveller’s diarrhea.

How to use it?

Imodium is available as tablets. The doses are different depending on different age groups.

For adult / children 12 years or above: start with 4mg after each loose stool, followed by 2 mg after each subsequent loose stool. The usual daily dose is 6-8mg and the maximum daily dose is 16mg.

9-11 years weighing >27-43 kg: start with 2 mg with first loose stool followed by 1 mg after each subsequent loose stool. Maximum daily dose is 6 mg/day.

6-8 years weighing 21-27kg: start with 2 mg with first loose stool followed by 1 mg after each subsequent loose stool. Maximum daily dose is 4 mg/day.

What are the side effects of Imodium?

Common side effects of Imodium include constipation and nausea.

Who should not take Imodium?

– People who are allergic to loperamide or any component of the formulation.
– Children under 2 years of age
– People with stomach discomfort but no diarrhea

Pharmacist Tips:

– Do not exceed the recommended dose as it can cause adverse effects.
– Speak to your doctor if your diarrhea lasts for more than 2 days.
– Be sure to stay hydrated when having diarrhea.
– Avoid raw food, spicy or oily food when taking Imodium for diarrhea.
– Avoid driving or operating machinery while taking this medication as tiredness, dizziness, or drowsiness may occur.

Common dosing schedule:
Imodium can be taken with or without food. You should take it with plenty of water.
