Eylea is a brand product that contains Aflibercept, which belongs to a class of antineovascularisation agents. It works by inhibiting the formation of new blood vessels that supply nutrients to the newly, excessively generated cells. It is therefore used in the treatment of exudative age-related macular degeneration, and macular edema.
Eylea is available as an injection. It is injected into the vitreous humour of the eyes.
For Diabetic macular oedema, Diabetic retinopathy, the starting dose is 2 mg once monthly for 5 months, followed by 2 mg once every 2 months. The dose might be adjusted after 12 months.
For Neovascular (wet) age-related macular degeneration, the starting dose is 2 mg once monthly for 3 consecutive months, followed by 2 mg every 2 months. The dose might be adjusted after 12 months.
Common side effects of Eylea include hypertension, weight loss, proteinuria, leukopenia, increased liver enzymes, fatigue and risk of infection.
