What is Celebrex for?

Celebrex is a type of Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs, and more specifically as a COX-2 inhibitor. COX-2 is an enzyme that is responsible for pain signalling, and inhibiting this can reduce pain. It is mainly used for pain relief including menstrual pain, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

How to use it?

Celebrex can be taken orally.


For pain and inflammation in osteoarthritis
200 mg daily in 1-2 divided doses


For pain and inflammation in rheumatoid arthritis
200 mg daily in 1-2 divided doses, then increase if necessary to 200 mg twice daily.


For dysmenorrhoea / pain relief
Initially 400 mg, followed by 200 mg if necessary on the first day; Maintenance: 200 mg twice daily


For ankylosing spondylitis
200 mg daily in 1-2 divided doses, then increase if necessary up to 400 mg daily, discontinue if no improvement after 6 weeks on maximum dose and consider alternative therapy.

What are the side effects of Celebrex?

Common side effects of Celebrex include indigestion, nausea and vomiting.


For people taking Celebrex for long-term, it may cause kidney injury and stomach bleeding.

Who should not take Celebrex?

  • People who are allergic to sulfonamides, celecoxib or any component of the formulation.
    People who are allergic to NSAIDs and have a history of hypersensitivity reactions (e.g. asthma, urticaria) after taking Aspirin or any other NSAIDs.
  • Patients who have chronic kidney disease

Pharmacist Tips:

Only take one NSAIDs at any one time, and do not combine Celebrex with other NSAIDs medicines.

Celebrex can be taken with or without food.
