Feeling overwhelmed with stress or anxiety? Your mental health shouldn't be left behind, and seeing a psychologist may be the right thing to do. We have prepared a practical guide to help you find the right psychologist in Hong Kong: locations, specialties, costs, insurance coverage and emergency support.
When considering your options, it is especially important you don’t have clinical psychology and counseling psychology mixed up.
Clinical psychology is a specialty that facilitates continuous and comprehensive treatments of diagnosable mental disorders and severe psychopathologies. Clinical psychologists turn to cognitive behavioral therapy and manual-based therapies for treatments.
Counseling psychology is a general practice within the field of psychology. By reviewing the individual’s life events, the sessions center on people’s day-to-day functioning, both individually and with concern to the surrounding relationships and broader community.

In Hong Kong the cost of seeing a clinical or counseling psychologist varies greatly (just like for other health practitioners), and it largely depends on private practices' locations, the qualifications of the psychologists and the length of the treatments. It usually ranges between HK$1,500 and HK$3,000 per session (around 1 hour).
According to Alea, clinical and counseling psychologist consultations are rarely covered in Hong Kong by local health insurance plans and if they are, they are subject to sub-limits. Usually, medical insurance plans that cover psychological services are comprehensive corporate plans. If you have health insurance questions, contact Alea’s experts at [email protected] or call +852 2606 2668.
