Looking for a dermatologist in Hong Kong? Skin problems are very common in Hong Kong due amongst others to the high level of pollution, stress levels and humid weather. In addition to physical discomfort, skin issues can have a big impact on your well-being and self confidence. Healthy Matters brings you a comprehensive guide to find a dermatologist in Hong Kong, with all the details you need!
Dermatology is a medical specialty treating the diseases of the skin, nails and hair. The treatments can involve surface treatment, use of medicines and even surgery. Common skin problems include eczema, psoriasis, acne, warts, contact dermatitis, rosacea, and other fungal, bacterial or viral skin infection. Many people refer to dermatologists as skin doctors, though their practice goes beyond skin issues.
Ever heard about venereology? It’s the study and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). If you have questions on STDs or you’re looking for STD testing, here is your go-to guide:
There are currently 107 registered dermatologists in Hong Kong. Here is the official list of registered dermatologists.
There are also 9 public clinics which provide dermatological services. The demand is high and waiting times in the public sector may be long as there are only 36 specialists.
In Hong Kong, it takes six years to become a dermatologist. The training involves three years of basic physician training validated by the Hong Kong College of Physicians and the Royal College of Physicians. The trainees will then take an additional training of three years to specialize in Dermatology and Venereology.
Moreover, to be able to practice as a specialist, Doctors must register with the Medical Council of Hong Kong. This ensures that all members are awarded and certified by the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine (HKAM), have completed their postgraduate medical training and continuously update their medical education.
Public sector fees: For eligible HKID-holders the prices range from HK$50 in a general clinic with dermatological services, to HK$135 in a specialized clinic.
Non-eligible people can still visit the clinics, but will be charged HK$445 each visit to a general clinic and HK$1,190 to specialized one in dermatology.
Beware of waiting times which can be very long in the public sector.
Please inquire at your clinic of choice for the specific costs.
Private sector fees: In the private sector, the cost of seeing a dermatologist varies tremendously according to the doctor’s location – like for other specialties. According to our research, the average cost of a first consultation can vary between HK$700 to HK$2,800.
* Initial consultations are typically more expensive than the following ones.

According to Alea, medically necessary dermatology treatments are reimbursed under doctor specialist fees. Some insurance plans may have a reimbursement limit and/or require a GP referral letter. Purely cosmetic dermatological treatments that are not triggered by an accident or an illness, are not covered by health insurance plans.
